"Autopsy: Death of a Killer Whale" Steel, paper, paint. 4' x 6' x 5'. 1998
Autopsy was created out of a desire to build something with a lot of weight. I was making very gestural sketches to come up with a form and then built this armature based on those sketches. I used layered paper because of the delicate texture and painted the inside with thick, glossy paint to contrast. In the end, I kept seeing the image of a beached whale in my head, and so I gave it this title. I decided that the weight of the object only enhanced its lifelessness.
