Bell for Eguez began with a circle. I was at an artist residency in Vermont, and had taught myself to steam and bend wood. I bent a circle, intending it to become a chandelier.....but "Lift" consumed my limited time in that studio. I drove the 6' circle back to Tennessee, strapped to the roof of my car, and reconfigured the original idea. Cynthia Eguez was a student with me at the Maryland Institute College of Art and in our senior year she made the most impressive honey-and-light installations. I was casting rubber that had the same color/translusence of honey and decided to make this large form in response to the installations I'd seen four years prior. Thus the name, Bell for Eguez. | |||
