"Unicle: A Multidirectional Vehicle with Human Engine" , Steel. 6' x 6' x 6'. 1997
Sometimes the process of making sculpture is so physical, I want the physicality to be the artwork. This piece was designed to illustrate the playful energy I get in the studio. "Unicle" was a challenge for me in three ways: I learned to weld with a torch, I learned to let go of part of the process and have the steel professionally rolled, and I learned the importance of labelling modular pieces correctly. "Unicle" came apart, and though theoretically each piece is the same, it was like wrestling an elephant to get it back together. My teacher laughed when I told him I didn't need to label anything. I found out the hard way.
