CD+M was hired to direct the lighting upgrade and possible lighting additions to the McAuley Aquatic Center at Georgia Tech. The original lighting was a metal halide system, which provided inadequate light levels and inconsistent color temperatures within the space as various lamps and ballasts failed. During conversations with GA Tech maintenance personal, it was discovered that the cost to maintain the failing lighting system was costing a significant amount. The biggest challenges with this project were having access to the site during the pandemic, aligning the performance of low-glare fixtures with the location of existing conduit, designing a system that would not require the contractor to work directly over the pool, and securing approved fixtures within a timeframe that worked with the school calendar, so that students would not be swimming during construction. In addition, GA Tech asked for light levels across the pool that met NCAA requirements for televised meets, using fixtures that would not flicker on film.
In the end, the NCAA light levels were met, the color temperature was unified across the whole room, the light levels in the audience area was increased, and glare potential was reduced by using indirect and louvered fixtures when possible.
