Located in Knoxville, TN, the renovation of the downtown Marriott Hotel with MHM celebrated the idea of the area emerging as a “Maker City”. Beyond general updates to the hotel’s materials, finishes, program, furniture, and lighting, the client also wanted to create areas that feature local artists and designers (aka “makers”). The prefunction lobby on the convention level hosts an oversized mural, as does the exterior façade. A large multi-purpose room in the hotel core includes a flexible space for local art to be shown on a revolving basis. The lighting approach for the hotel focused on supporting the new aesthetic with careful fixture selection in tandem with ensuring comfortable light levels were achieved. The restaurant uses discreet, warm-dim fixtures to provide patrons with warmer light as it is dimmed for evening scenes. The murals were each lit with high performance asymmetric fixtures and high CRI. Multiple studies and comparisons were made to minimize glare, flicker, and poor contrast ratios yet deliver comfortable, inviting light - all while staying within budget constraints.
